+ Worshipping the Lord through GIVING

God calls us to generosity throughout the Bible. Going all the way back to Abraham, God commands us to give a tithe (or one tenth), the first fruits of our produce back to Him in an act of worship and obedience (Gen., Deut., Lev., Pr., Mal.). While a disciple’s generosity should be present in all areas of life, the Lord specifically calls for the first fruits to be given back through the local church (Numbers 18 and 2 Corinthians 8).

God instructs us in this way not because He lacks anything. His heart is not to “get something from His people,” but rather to return to them a blessing (Proverbs 11: 24-25). Sometimes this blessing is physical, sometimes spiritual, sometimes seen, sometimes unseen. Giving back to the Lord is an amazing opportunity for disciples to worship the One to whom everything already belongs (Psalm 24:1). Giving of our time, talents and specifically our treasures demonstrates our trust in, and dependence on, Him (Malachi 3).

Jesus’ teaching reveals that now, as we are under His grace, God searches our hearts with regard to generosity and giving. We are not all called to equal giving, but to equal sacrifice (Mark 12: 41-44). The hearts of His people should be both willing and joyful when bringing an offering before the Lord (2 Corinthians 9: 5-7).

+ Worshipping the Lord through STEWARDSHIP

Our stewardship of the personal resources God has entrusted to us has real spiritual significance (Matthew 6:21). Jesus taught about money and stewardship in 11 of the 39 parables and in about 25% of His recorded earthly ministry. We will all be held accountable for our stewardship of His resources (Matthew 25:14-30), and our finances should speak to the way the gospel has transformed our lives.

Our heart is to equip you to steward your entrusted resources in a way that reflects God’s glory. We encourage you to read all of the passages in the Bible that address this area, as well as to utilize the resources listed below.
